Australia Diary 3 January 2002

I spent my day getting cultured. There is a great art gallery in the northern part of the central business district (CBD) of sydney. Head up to the Botanical Gardens and you're sure to come across the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The gallery has a superb range of pictures and sculptures of all shapes, ages and cultures. From Thai Buddhas to Aboriginal art, taking in portraits and impressionist along the way - and the best thing is that it's all free!

Wander back south through Hyde park and you'll come across the ANZAC memorial to the Australians lost in war. The sculpture and building that it housed in complement each other beautifully. The scuplture is of a young man who has 'made the ultimate sacrifice' being supported by three women; his mother, sister and wife - who has a baby in her arms. It is a poignent reminder of those who are left behind forced to deal with the fall out of war.

Take a look at a map of the city for more information, or check out the interactive sydney city map online.
